OBJECTIVE To understand what makes an object float in liquids. How to figure out how dense an object is based on its interaction in a pale of liquid. EQUIPMENT Interactive Physics Fundamentals Vol. 1 – Buoyancy Lab Excel or equivalent INTRODUCTION PROCEDURE Open “Exploration of Physics Ver 3.2” from your computer. Click on “Fluids” from the top tool bar and select the “Buoyancy Lab” from the list (highlighted in yellow). See figure 1 below. Figure 1 Familiarize yourself with the toolbar on the left side using the provided handout located on the canvas course page. Spend time examining the main screen of the “Buoyancy” lab. See figure 2 for more details. The screen shows a large pail of liquid with a square of material showing its two vector components, a graphical representation of the forces, the numerical forces acting, and at the bottom the various slider adjustments. Figure 2 Leaving all setting at default, calculate the density of the object. Will it float in the liquid? Run the simulation and observe the forces acting on the object. Once the object is fully submerged does the buoyancy force change? Stop the simulation and drag the object out of the liquid. Observe the buoyancy force as the object leaves the liquid. Start the simulation and pay attention to when the buoyancy force stabilizes. Reset the simulation and change the liquid Density to 1.5. Will the object float? Play the simulation to check. Reset the simulation. Slowly increase the volume by 5 cc and run the simulation. Record the mass and volume in excel and calculate the density. Record the Gravitational Force and the max buoyancy force. Calculate the max Force on the object. Repeat step 9 until the object floats. Reset the simulation and refer to the data from the Density lab. Choose five objects and input the mass and volume into the buoyancy lab and record whether they float or not.
